In the last few years Craig's list and a bunch of other website's reader and have fallen victim to the various bad check scams, please note that what I describe here could be done with anything (car, bike, truck, TV, anything) actually there doesn't even need to be any item involved. Just be aware that no one is going to pay more than your asking.
Car Scams - Selling your car on a website
The car scam is when you list a car on craigs list or some other website and get a response from a very eager buyer saying he will pay more than your asking because he needs it shipped, painted... any reason, the point is he wants to send you extra money which you will eather send some where or drop off some where. Once you accept the scammers offer he sends you a check, you deposit wait for it to clear. By this point I feel so bad for the seller everything sounds so great they get what they the price they asked for.... everything is going smoth, so they thought. The check clears you drop off or send the money.
Now for the bad part.
After a short period of time your bank calls you saying the check was no good you owe XXXXX amount. The buyer will try to contact the scammer but he's no where to be found. The car scam happens know how to spot it and you'll be fine.
